#SBFCSW “Preaching Christ to the Natural Man”, Pastor Tom Ascol

Sermon Poetry – “Lord, Help Me”
Sermon Title – “Preaching Christ to the Natural Man”
Preacher – Dr. Tom Ascol

We live in a time where there’s gods all about
We’re proud of our pluralist ways
The people don’t know of the God of the Word
Ignoring the Ancient of Days

Lord help me when walking in markets and ways
When working among fellow men
Lord help me to preach Jesus Christ to the lost
To sinners, the lost and the damned

Lord help me be faithful to rightly engage
The culture in which I am pleased
To study and know it and judge it by truth
Lord help and show me Your Grace

Lord help me remember the sin of my heart
The sin that enslaves these around
Lord help me to love You and love neighbors too
A sinner was lost, now I’m found

In me light a fire that burns for Your Name
Your honor and glory proclaim
In culture around me, your honor to seek
Proclaiming Your glorious fame

Lord help me to study Your Scripture of Truth
And study the culture around
Respecting the sinner and loving the lost
In Christ, make the lost sinner found

And finally, Father, Your Truth will I tell
I haven’t the strength on my own
Please make me committed, Your glory to seek
Save sinners in Jesus the Son

Sermon Poetry – “Lord Keep Me from Deficiency”
Preacher – Pastor Tom Ascol

Lord keep me from deficiency
Help me to preach theology
To tell of you, my Father Sweet
My kind and sovereign King

Lord keep me from deficiency
From apastoral mockery
In loving all your children sweet
And shepherding Your Flock

Lord keep me from deficiency
And help me in expositing
To preach Your Truth with clarity
A herald of Your Word

Lord keep me from deficiency
So sinners might your glory see
In Christ the Light our hearts are free
In Christ our souls are saved

Lord keep me from deficiency
With praying, reading, listening
To know Your Word, to know Your sheep
So I can preach the Word

Sermon Poetry – “Salvation’s Found Alone in Christ”
Preacher – Dr. Tom Ascol

Come look what God has done in Christ
He sent His Son to live and die
He died for us, so you and I,
Can praise His Holy Name

Salvation’s found alone in Christ
The Bleeding Savior from on High
Be covered by His sacrifice
And love the Son of God

Because of Christ I strive to be
A vessel so that men might see
How Jesus Christ has love for me
Sweet Jesus, give me strength!

The Doctrines that I hold as true
Are false without my Savior who
Came to this earth for me and you
I praise His Holy Name

Ascol on the Difficulty of Church Discipline

There is no easy way to lead a church to understand, embrace and practice church discipline. It is hard work and pastors must not allow themselves to become paralyzed by the myth that “there’s got to be an easier way.” There isn’t. If we are going to be faithful shepherds then we must roll up our sleeves, dig in our heels and do the hard work of lovingly, prayerfully and persistently leading our churches to obey Christ at this point. It is not easy, but it is worth it because God will be glorified, the church will be strengthened in holiness and mission and individual believers will be helped. … Many of the good things in ministry occur over long periods of time. Though God may well lead a pastor not to spend the better part of his life in one church, there are wonderful blessings that come from doing so.

Post-Election True/False Test

I got this from Tom Ascol, who got it from Dr. Wyman Richardson.  Thought-provoking to say the least.

  1. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, Jesus will still be King.
  2. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, our responsibilities as Christians will not have changed one iota.
  3. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, the greatest agent for social change in America will still be winning the hearts and minds of men and women through the gospel, not legislation.
  4. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, my primary citizenship will still be in this order – (1) the Kingdom of God, (2) America, not vice-versa.
  5. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, the tomb will still be empty.
  6. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, the cross, not the government, will still be our salvation.
  7. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, our children will still be more concerned with whether or not we spend time with them than with who is President.
  8. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, my neighbor will still be my neighbor, and loving him/her will still be the second greatest commandment. (Do you know the first?)
  9. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, the only way to see abortion ultimately overturned will still be winning men and women to a high view of life through the gospel of Christ.
  10. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, the only way to see gay marriage ultimately defeated will still be winning men and women to a biblical view of marriage through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  11. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, my retirement will still not match my treasure in Heaven.
  12. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, “Jesus Is Lord” will still be the greatest truth in the Universe.
  13. True/False: The day after the election, regardless of who wins, we will still know that God is in control.

“Growing the Local Church” – Ephesians 4:1-16 (Dr. Tom Ascol)

Ephesians 4:1-16 :  Tom Ascol

The notes are working a little better this time.  These are my notes verbatim (forgive any misspellings or mistakes.  Anything in quotes are from Tom that I was able to type out fast enough to make sure I heard right.  Everything else are simply my notes and if you ask anyone who knows me, me hearing ain’t always the best.  :-)

The Gospel is Good News
It is what God has done for us.
Paul always goes from Creed to Deed
The emphasis in Ephesians has application yes, but its about doctrinal truth
For a church to walk in a way worthy of its calling is to….. (didn’t get the last part)

The Community of Faith (in the Church)

Some churches are very active in being involved with the works of the kingdom, yet when doctrine is spoken of, they glaze over
-like a man with long arms and legs but a tiny head

Then some church over-emphasize Doctrine and have a problem with fleshing out that doctrine
-like a man with a huge head and little tiny arms and little tiny legs

“Both are a perversion.”

Every member is to work on unity in the church

First, a right understanding
-unity can be very easily misunderstood
-unity is NOT mere toleration
-”toleration of gross and fragrant sin is not unity, it is an unholy conspiracy”
-Neither is unity coercion
-individual Christians will be at different levels of maturity
-Uniformity is NOT to be coerced
-Uniformity also is not mere outward
What Unity IS
-essential agreement that Christians share in mind, heart, will, and purpose
-God is the Creature of Unity, who cause is to exist in the life of the local Church
-This is to be maintained through the bond of peace
-He regenerates individuals who are brought into the Church
-what Christ has done on the Cross has crushed the dividing line that we would have had between us

“One significant reason that so many churches do NOT taste this kind [of God-honoring] unity is that so many churches are filled with unregenerate church members”
-this is especially so in the SBC

There can be NO unity between amongst a group of believers and non-believers
-this is a huge reason why so many churches grasp for substitutes for Biblical Unity

How do we promote humility within ourselves?
-be honest with yourself

We should be long-suffering with one another

We are to love one another as God has loved us
-He sent and sacrificed His Son
-God’s love is not dependent upon our performance, but rather on the performance of One who has already done the job!
-this knowledge sets us free to love!

The Church ought to be a community of Love!

Christian Unity is a Fact and a Duty
-When we are saved, we are joined together in Christ with our fellow brothers and sisters
-Yet we also have a responsibility to work on our unity

Jesus prayed for our Unity
-He did this on the Eve of His Death
-Unity is a Biblical Teaching, it’s a Biblical Reality, it’s a Biblical Responsibility

The Church is considered by Paul as being One Body

Christian unity is based upon Jesus Christ
-because we have One Lord, we are to preserve the Unity that the Spirit has provided for the Church

Christ designed Diversity
“Unity is not Uniformity”
“Where there is not Diversity in the Local Church, something is seriously wrong.  In fact, it may be the mark of a cult, instead of a mark of the church of Jesus Christ.”

All of God’s People are given gifts to encourage and edify the Body

A balanced Church will have as a stated goal to have every member exercise their God-given gifts
When a body is functioning as it should, in unity, with diversity, what will be the result?
The Church will experience Corporate Growth and Maturity
-    Doctrinal Stability
o    We are to no longer be Children

  • Children are naturally unstable
  • “Balanced Churches produce Balanced Christians”

-    Loving Devotion
o    To Truth and to People
o    We are to love Truth yes, but we are to also love People
o    One of the blights to us is that too often we are known as loving Truth way more than People
o    We are to Love Truth AND People
-    Practical Service
o    We must recognize our relationship to Christ
o    We must recognize our relationship with the Body
o    We must recognize our Responsibility as an Individual within the Body
