The End of the Great Commission? 10 Questions.

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.  5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,a’ and will deceive many.  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.  At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,  and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.  Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,  but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.  And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

- Matthew 24:3-14

Question #1:

When we define “unreached” people groups, how much reliance are we placing on ideas born of sociological, anthropological, linguistic, philosophical and psychiatric disciplines in order to hasten the conclusion of the Great Commission and the advent of Christ’s Return?

Question #2:

In trying to bring about the conclusion of the Great Commission and the advent of Christ’s Return, how much focus are we placing on making people groups “reached” and how much focus are we placing on primarily evangelizing all sinners?

Question #3:

In defining “unreached” people groups, are we considering the effects that time has (in terms of the evolution of language, interbreeding, emerging people groups, etc.) on the structure and makeup of the nations?

Question #4:

Assuming, again, that we are defining people groups correctly and appropriately what is our confidence level that we have done our research correctly? Have we thoroughly mapped these unreached groups (especially to the point that we can confidently expect the return of Christ when the number of unreached people groups reaches zero)?

Question #5:

Are we defining “unreached” correctly?

Question #6:

Are we defining “reached” correctly?

Question #7:

What do we do about the people in the reached group who are born into sin and are outside of Christ? Do we focus too much on the unreached groups such that are we forgetting about generations of new sinners?

Question #8:

In striving so hard to bring Jesus back again, are we failing in our duty and privilege to evangelize the lost in order to get to heaven sooner?

Question #9:

In striving to “evangelize the world in our generation” are we failing to teach the next and upcoming generation[s] to evangelize the lost? Is the Missio Dei so dependent upon us? Have we considered that perhaps God might not complete His Mission in our lifetime? Do we forget that just as the past 2000 years worth of generations were called to evangelize the world, that we are called to that as well and that the generation following us will most likely still have work to do? Are we willing to admit that another generation might very well have the privilege of being on earth when Jesus Returns?

Question #10:

Are we not called to evangelize, making disciples of all peoples and that Christ will always be with us, even to the end of the age? Should we not focus on Christ’s Great Commission and leave the saving, completing and returning up to Him?

Missio Dei in the Book of Acts

Acts shows that Christanity is a global religion, and that it has been so since its very beginning.  It is the story of how the purpose of Jesus was lived out in his disciples, often hesitatingly and erratically, but powerfully and decisively, as his Holy Spirit led them forward.  It is the story of how the “little flock” that followed Jesus was forged into a fellowship of men and women that resulted in the “church”.  Mainly, it is the story of a new message for all humanity called the Gospel, that promises “times of refreshing” for all who will turn to Jesus Christ.  It tells how that “good news” transformed lives from all nations, tribes, tongues and races where it was preached.  In addition, the fact that Luke wrote the story in the Greek language, used mainly for international trade, is eloquent testimony to the conern of the apostles to tell their story among all peoples.

A Prayer for Forgiveness

Father, give me your eyes, give me your heart and give me your concern for the lost.  Help me to see the pain, the suffering and the deep hurts around me and help me, enable me Father, to do what I can and be what I can be to make you known through acts of kindness and love and to speak seasoned words of Biblical Truth, so that those around me can come to You and find in You their Father and an eternal place of rest and security in Christ.

Father, forgive me for my unkindness to my friends and family and co-workers when I don’t speak of You to them.  Forgive me for being too comfortable and too used to my life of ease and blessings.  Make me thankful and help me to use those blessings for Your Glory and the good of those around me.  Help me to hold on to the things of this earth lightly, with my eyes and mind and hopes fixed on You and the eternity that I have awaiting me.

Father, I have not the strength to do this.  I need You.  You are strong and You are mighty.   You are the Kind Sovereign.  I am but a tool, a weak, broken, busted tool in Your Strong Hand.

Be glorified, Father.  Take the glory that is due you and accomplish Your Purposes.

Thank you for Your Love for me.  In Christ’s Holy Name and through the Spirit’s Work, Amen.

“Growing the Local Church” – Evangelism and Church Growth (Pastor Jason Montgomery)

My notes verbatim from “Evangelim and Church Growth” by Jason Montgomery: (remember, my words, NOT JASON’s  :-)  )

Did Jesus have to die for the Church to grow?  (first question)

This is a question that needs to be considered by every faithful preacher of the Word of God.
The Gospel is absolutely unexpected.
The Word of the Gospel should not be received by anyone in the World.  This is foolishness to the World.
-    the world depends on its own word

If you want something that works, preach the Gospel!
-if you wanna be innovative, PREACH THE GOSPEL!!!

God takes nobodies and makes them into somebodies in his own economy.
The Gospel is not some amazing sign that the world is expected to be enamored with.
-    we are in danger of operating out of an understanding of the Gospel, as well as an understanding of people that are taught in the Word of God.
-    People DON’T LIKE JESUS
3 Observations from the Passage (1 Cor. 1:18-2:5)
“The Gospel of the Cross of Christ arrives in unexpected offense”
“The Gospel of the Cross of Christ delivers un unexpected impact”
“The Gospel of the Cross of Christ in proclaimed in unexpected weakness”

The Gospel of the Cross of Christ arrives in unexpected offense
-The Gospel not only lacks cultural sensitivies
-In fact, it has cultural insensitivities
-it is counter cultural!
-it is folly to those who are perishing
-we go into the world to destroy unbelief
-man does not tell God what Truth is
-man fancies himself a god in his own right until they see God
-no man can stand before God and say that He did not make His Truth available
-His glory HAS been made available!
-you want Drama?  Set the Gospel on stage.
“What men are wanting us to do is come and stroke their idols”

The Gospel of the Cross of Christ delivers an unexpected impact
God uses the foolish things!
“From the world’s perspective we are no prize.  Yet from a heavenly perspective, these are the kinds of people God endeavors to save”
God does not target the world’s elite with His Gospel

The Gospel of the Cross of Christ is proclaimed in unexpected weakness
Paul’s logic warns us against separating the message from the methods
Celebrity evangelism shows that we are in danger of losing sight of the power of the Spirit driven Gospel

Quote of the Week – David Livingstone on a Missionary’s Sacrifice

“People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa….It is emphatically no sacrifice. Say rather it is a privilege.”

- David Livingstone

Music Wednesday – Begin With the End

This is another great song from the guys at 116 Clique, called “Begin with the End”.

The song comes from an album called “13 Letters“, which is basically a summary of Paul’s Epistles in rap form.

Pure Greatness.

Quote of the Week – Hudson Taylor on Missionary Requirements

“There are three indispensable requirements for a missionary: 1. Patience 2. Patience 3. Patience.”

Music Wednesday – Send Me

This music video was put together by the guys at History Makers.  The artist is Lecrae.  The song is “Send Me”.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjAJn7mLn-s]

send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
lemme go lemme go!
(repeat x4)

i seen it with my own two,
there’s no way i can show you
a perfectly poverty stricken people with no view.
And i bet you can’t believe this,
they never heard of jesus.
Heard young butler, lil wayne, and young jeezy.

No one’s signing up to go on missions this summa.
Rather sit at home and watch exibit pimp in a humma
while a nine year old is shot down.
No one’s screaming ‘stop now!’
no bridge illustrations for criminals who on lock down.

People deep in africa
looking for an answer bra’.
In china man,
they’re dieing man,
until they know who died for sins.
So look what grace did.
Not for us to stay here
inside our comfort zones
at home in mama’s basement.

Get out on the grind y’all.
Ain’t no better time doll.
I know y’all read the great commission.
Let me just remind y’all:
make disciples of the nations.
Teach’m to obey the lord.
Have to lead someone to christ before i face the lord.

Send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
lemme go lemme go!
(repeat x4)

hey! After, 1,000 years in the west and the churches
get’n bigger daily without understand’n worship. (say what?)
Some regenerate but a lot ain’t saved.
You walk outside and be surprised cuz the block ain’t changed.
And the numbers they be get’n me.
Something just ain’t hit’n them.
America ain’t christian they practice’n the ritual.
That’s why we should be mission though.
Hey, what you think i’m spit’n for?
The united states is die’n
and in the east is looking pitiful.

Some places if they catch you
they’ll arrest you.
They’ll serve you,
but they still need the word too.
The gospel should be heard too.
We claim we ain’t ashamed,
but we ain’t hit the block up.
Were in our christian bubble,
while our brotha’s get’n locked up.
Lord i wanna stock up,
pack a bag and walk up
in a country where my faith may get me shot up
anywhere i go, whether my city or far abroad,
i just wanna show’ christ the risen holy god.

Send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
lemme go lemme go!
(repeat x4)

i know they’re die’n in the streets over in the middle east.
Some kids sink in piece
others hold’n up a piece.
If the violence doesn’t cease,
then at least the deceased
might know jesus as their savior as their bodies hit the streets.
And i know this is a graphic view.
And i pray that it’s attack’n you.
Track’n you to act and do
what you see in the back illusion.
Mathew twenty-four and fourteen.
We should read it twice
before we think that life is just a battle
see we free in christ!
Look dawg! Life is more than church work and football!
What if you were dead and seen that christians overlooked y’all!
This is why we leave the couch
and leave the comforts of our house
to show a die’n world a god they’ll probably never read about.

The great commission says make disciples of all nations.
Have we even made them in our own nation?
Come on christians!
Missions exist because worship doesn’t.
People don’t worship the god who made them.
We’re ambassadors.
Let’s go!

Send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
send me I’ll go,
lemme go lemme go!
(repeat x4)

Music Wednesday – Tears of the Saints

“Tears of the Saints” by Leeland.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg1jBuInMqA]

There are many prodigal sons
On our city streets they run
Searching for shelter
There are homes broken down
People’s hopes have fallen to the ground
From failures

This is an emergency!

There are tears from the saints
For the lost and unsaved
We’re crying for them come back home
We’re crying for them come back home
And all your children will stretch out their hands
And pick up the crippled man
Father, we will lead them home
Father, we will lead them home

There are schools full of hatred
Even churches have forsaken
Love and mercy
May we see this generation
In its state of desperation
For Your glory

This is an emergency!

There are tears from the saints
For the lost and unsaved
We’re crying for them come back home
We’re crying for them come back home
And all your children will stretch out their hands
And pick up the crippled man
Father, we will lead them home
Father, we will lead them home

Sinner, reach out your hands!
Children, in Christ you stand!
Sinner, reach out your hands!
Children, in Christ you stand!

There are tears from the saints
For the lost and unsaved
We’re crying for them come back home
We’re crying for them come back home
And all Your children will stretch out their hands
And pick up the crippled man
Father, we will lead them home
Father, we will lead them home

Timmy Brister on Adoption

I just came across this on Timmy Brister’s blog regarding the upcoming 2008 Together for Adoption Conference.

“One of the greatest ways to live counter-culturally in our day of rugged individualism where personal ambition and careers eclipse the call to embrace children is the practical application of the doctrine of adoption.  If our spiritual adoption is the highest privilege the gospel offers, then a gospel-driven response would be to offer the highest privilege to children with the same love our heavenly Father has bestowed upon us.”

- Timmy Brister

Quote of the Week – William Booth

Missions has been on my mind quite a bit, so for the next few weeks I’m going to have mission’s quotes for the QOTW.  Enjoy.

“‘Not called!’ did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters, and servants and masters not to come there. And then look Christ in the face, whose mercy you have professed to obey, and tell him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish his mercy to the world.”

- William Booth
