Sermon Poetry – “Lord Give Me Great Humility”

Sermon Poetry, 10 January 2010
Sermon Title – “Christian Unity and the Pastoral Ministry, #2”
Sermon Text – Ephesians 4:7-16
Preacher – Pastor Larry Vincent

Lord give me great humility
As now I learn Your Word to speak
Preparing for the Ministry
A slave of Jesus Christ

The task is great and humbling
Proclaiming Truth while worshipping
Equipping Saints Your praise to sing
Lord Jesus, grant me strength

The preacher’s called to teach the Word
Equipping saints to use the Sword
We stand by grace of God our Lord
His glory is our goal

To Christ our lives and words submit
With growth in grace, engaging sin
In battle fierce, our prayer to win
Lord Jesus, keep my soul!

I’m called to hold the Word of God
And trust its truths, in word and deed
Its words to trust, its truths to heed
Submitting to the King

Lord God I sin and disobey
Forgive my sins, I weekly pray
And keep me through the coming Day
When I will then be home

“A Baptist Prayer” (beware the sarcasm)

“We brag about the riches you have given unto us”
We brag about the way we use the money that we’ve earned
We then compare percentages on what we give to God
Because we give to missions more, our words will have more force

We give to such and such a group, we’re doing Jesus’ work
Here’s five percent we give to help the Holy Spirit move
And don’t forget church planting works (not A29!) here’s ten percent more dough
And to CP, a fifth we give, yes, praise God’s Gracious Love

“Lord, thank you that we are not like those cold and hardened men
Who do not give as much as we, to missions through the world
We go beyond the normal tithes, we fast and tithe some more
We praise Your name, you make us kind, our dear and loving Lord!”

Because we give, you all must hear the words we have to speak
We’ll lead Resurgences and win, God’s blessed us this we say
We’re rich you know, our riches will enable us to serve
More than the ones we know who’ve not, it’s us who’ll lead the way

Quote of the Week – Russel Moore on Theology and Demons

“You see, in the room will be future pastors and missionaries and counselors and women’s ministry leaders. They’ve been called out by God to minister to people they’ve not met yet. And that’s what theology is about. It’s not about quarreling about words, or setting up partisan divisions. Theology is helping a shellshocked widow clean up after a suicide. Theology is about crying with a teenage boy who’s body is shaking with crystal meth. Theology drives you to rock orphans in India, singing “Jesus Loves Me” while you pray they learn what that means. Theology is hugging an animist African’s neck while you tell him Jesus can protect him from the spirits he fears…or hugging a self-righteous Southern Baptist American’s neck while you tell him he doesn’t fear those demonic spirits nearly enough.”

- Russell D. Moore (“Will the Devil Be in My Classroom Today?“)

Quote of the Week: Newton on the Vocation of Gospel Ministry

I picked up this quote from Justin Taylor‘s Between Two Worlds:

“The message I would bear is Jesus Christ and him crucified and from the consideration of the great things he has done, to recommend and enforce Gospel holiness and Gospel love, and to take as little notice of our fierce contests, controversies and divisions as possible.

My desire is to lift up the banner of the Lord, and to draw the sword of the Spirit not against names, parties and opinions, but against the world, the flesh and the devil; and to invite poor perishing sinners not to espouse a system of my own or any man’s, but to fly to the Lord Jesus, the sure and only city of refuge and the ready, compassionate and all sufficient Saviour of those that trust in him.”

-John Newton

Quote of the Week – T.O. on Himself

You just gotta love the guy’s humility.

”It doesn’t matter what they say about me now…The Lord has obviously blessed me with a lot of talent.”

- Terrel Owens

(for a quote in a somewhat similar vein, see Luke 18:11-12)

Piper on the Current Election Season

“Our posture shouldn’t be one of anger and triumphalism but compassion and humility. We remember that what saved us from our foolishness wasn’t a political debate or a ballot box but the gospel about Jesus and the sovereign working of God.

We engage as recovering fools with empathy for the foolish.

- John Piper (emphasis added)
